Frugal February Break
In Saskatchewan, the schools have a week break in February, which means the kids have been home and Mark has been off work all week!
For the first time in years, we stayed home. No trips to the mountains or the closest big cities, and therefore no money spent on travel, accommodations, attractions or food.
Although traveling will always be a priority to us, we know that right now it wouldn't be wise. Our top priority at the moment is paying off $5000 in debt and building our rainy day fund back up to somewhere between $2000/$3000. Thankfully, our tax return this year will allow us to cross both of those things off our list as soon as we submit our taxes next week!
We also know that trips to the city (a 2.5 hour drive one way) will likely become frequent once again as our youngest son is due for yet another medical intervention. He was born with congenital heart disease, had 3 open heart surgeries in the first 2 years of his life, and unfortunately needs another intervention in the near future. The time spent away from home and living that hospital life is always the hardest on our emotions and our finances.
So, this year, making the choice to stay home was clearly the right move for us. And we've had a wonderful time! All it took was a little planning to ensure we didn't get stir crazy! We love hosting our friends and preparing meals to share, and we were fortunate enough to be invited by other friends to share meals at their homes. We have spent time with different friends each day of the week and our buckets are filled! At the same time, we've been able to tackle some household chores and spend quality time as a family playing board games, baking and making forts.
All this to say, a little intentionality goes a long way. And it's all part of frugal living! We have hardly made a dent in our meal plan for the week, and therefore expect another very small grocery bill next week, possibly coming under budget for the month! Spending quality time as a family and with our friends keeps us busy and our hearts happy, without spending a penny.
Now, I have some chicken soup and biscuits to make before some more friends arrive for some outdoor play and lunch! Enjoy your weekend !
