The Beginning

We are the Westmans, a one-income family of five ready to take the plunge into the world of frugality, and we don't really know exactly how we are going to do this. As it stands, our basic plan is to implement little life hack after little life hack until we find ourselves in the position of financial independence.

We are currently filling our minds with as much information we can gather from FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Early) experts online, and plan to share with you what we do, how we do it, and if it works! The point of this blog is to have accountability and for you to be able to follow our journey from DAY ONE.

Let me tell you a little bit about us and what we do!

My name is Rebecca, and I will be writing the majority of our blog posts. I have been a stay-at-home mom for the past 6.5 years. Just over a month ago I started looking after a little girl every school day. She is the same age as our youngest son, and her parents are teachers so it works out wonderfully that our son has a playmate, and I have school holidays off! Plus, this little bit of extra income is a big deal for our family! I love to sing, cook, bake, write, and take pictures. I am a reluctant frugalist. I enjoy spending money and I wish I had endless amounts of it to get all the things I want and do all the things I want to do. However, in my heart of hearts, I know that's not REALLY what I want. What I really want is stress-free time doing the things I love with the people I love. Freedom. So, here I am, making the decision to jump into frugalism with two feet. It's not going to come naturally to me, but I am ready and willing!

Mark, my husband, and occasional writer for this blog, is a grade 9 teacher. He has been teaching for 8 years and has a passion for the outdoors. He loves to hike, bike, ski, snowshoe and chop wood. He is always eager to learn new outdoorsy skills and looks forward to passing them down to our children. Mark has always been good with money. He's responsible and disciplined and has maybe been frustrated with me more than a time or two for buying far too many extravagant Starbucks drinks. Sorry, babe! Over the past few years, he has been diving into the world of investments and is always learning more and more about how to manage our finances. We're ready to take the next step together by frugalizing our lives!

Together we have 3 wonderful children: Thaddeus (6.5), Juliet (5) and Iver (3), and a golden retriever named Arrow (2). We currently live in a humble 3 bedroom home in a very small town in Saskatchewan, Canada.

We are pretty pumped about pursuing frugal living and sharing our journey with you. Thanks for following along!
